'Spiritual' activities:

  • ensure that each service addresses the environment in some way
  • environmental challenges issued in services and results collated and displayed
  • young people's art and drama group concentrated on environmental issues
  • junior church links eco issues to Bible stories
  • Under 5s group links Bible stories to natural world
  • Brownies have looked at a number of different creation care topics
  • Guides have looked at recycling and Fairtrade
  • Showed film of An Inconvenient Truth.

Practical activities:

  • appointed an Eco-officer to oversee the work in the church (and circuit)
  • utilities eco audit (undertaken through the Council) - caretaker rewarded for any reductions made.
  • changed to Green Electricity supply and low energy bulbs
  • careful control of energy usage through detailed monitoring
  • flexible timers used
  • dual flush installed in ladies toilet
  • dishwater A+ rated
  • use local or fairtrade supplies in cafe run by church
  • good recycling practice
  • fruit from extensive fruit trees in church garden used in kitchens
  • green offsetting fund set up for congregation to contribute to
  • notice board well used to communicate activities to church membership
  • church walks to get people outside organised once a month.

Outreach activities:

  • worked with local Methodist circuit to encourage environmental behaviour
  • Fairtrade and One World group activities
  • lots of connections to other eco-groups through eco-officer.
